Keep fit karate

I was inspired to take up karate by all those great martial arts movies of the 1980s. Even now, I often imagine myself facing a room full of black-clad ninjas when I’m practising my moves alone! But you don’t have to a karate kid trapped in a man’s body to enjoy this great sport.
I’ve seen karate advertised as a good way of learning self defence tactics; in fact there are custom stickers advertising classes of this nature all over our local sports centre. I can see how karate would help you become more confident; and guys are probably less likely to attack a confident looking woman than one who is sneaking along the pavement, looking down at her feet. However, karate at its highest levels is almost like a choreographed dance. There are set moves that we all know and that we all know how to respond to. How many potential attackers are going to help us out by approaching from just the right angle so we can use the karate moves we have learned on him?
Karate is, however, a great way to keep fit. I think most men and women who turn up for their first session are always pleasantly surprised by how much of a workout you get during a class. I still end up sweaty and breathless after a couple of hours in the dojo, and I’ve been learning for years. I know a few women in my class who came along thinking they would be there for a few weeks to pick up some self defence tips and are still here a few years later, having discovered karate is a better workout than their aerobics classes. And a lot more fun!
