Consistency and discipline matter a lot

December 15th, 2011

Trying to master karate is like trying to climb Mount Everest. You would have to spend many years training yourself before you can even think of starting out to achieve your goals. Merely having good intentions and motivation is not enough to climb Mount Everest successfully. The same logic applies to karate as well. Consistency is important. Missing even one training session is not advisable. It is not as if you cannot catch up if you miss a training session. However, you will be giving into your tendency to be casual about important things when you miss the training session.

You do not stop breathing just because you are facing a problem at work or because you have a lot of study, right? Trying to master karate involves adopting the same approach. I have seen many persons quit the training session in the middle simply because they do not appreciate such a harsh approach. Well, you have to learn to be strict and disciplined about your own performance. That is the whole idea behind trying to master a martial art. To wait for some third-party to scold you for your indiscipline is not a good thing.

You will never master karate if you adopt this approach. Many persons feel bemused by my rigid approach. Would you turn a blind eye to frequent absenteeism amongst your employees if it increases the possibility of a work accident compensation claim against you? Of course not. In he same way, I feel I am responsible for upholding the grand tradition of karate.
It has been a significant part of my life and I want to make sure that people treat it with utmost seriousness. Where is the question of mastering complicated moves and understanding the physical and mental responsibilities involved in mastering karate if you cannot attend a training session regularly?
